Cnut: England's Viking King 1016-35

Description

King Cnut ruled England from 1017 to 1035 and left behind him a legacy of peace, law and order. However, the beginnings of his kingship were less auspicious. He was a cruel and vicious warrior, who invaded England with his father Swegen Forkbeard, perhaps at a tender age. After Swegen's death in 1014 Cnut went home to Denmark to gather his forces. He returned the following year and conquered much of England in his bid for the Crown, but even on the death of Aethelred II the English refused to proclaim him king. However, his victory over the alternative candidate, Aethlred's son King Edmund Ironside, at the battle of Ashingdon, forced a division of the country between the two. Shortly afterwards, Edmund died and Cnut became undisputed leader. M K Lawson brings to life the reality of this paradoxical king: his ruthlessness in the face of his enemies alongside his piety and law-giving nature. He also provides an insight into how a Danish king managed to accommodate himself to an English system of law and order that has resonated through history.

When his snowman comes to life, a little boy invites him into his home and in return is taken on a flight high above the countryside, in a classic wordless story with a new cover. An ALA Notable Children's Book. Ellis has given us a gripping and dramatic portrait of one of the most crucial and misconstrued periods in American history: the years between the end of the Revolution and the formation of the federal government. "The Quartet" unmasks a myth, and in its place presents an even more compelling truth one that lies at the heart of understanding the creation of the United States of America." Have you Cnut: England's Viking King 1016-35 free epub met Jefferson Winter yet? Ex-FBI Profiler Jefferson Winter is back in James Carol's follow-up to the bestselling Broken Dolls. Watch Me is an ITV Specsavers Crime Thriller Bookclub selection. "You'll finish this book and be straight online to find out when the next one's coming." (Mark Billingham). "I loved him ...A really interesting and different character." (Kate Mosse). Will you love Winter too?

Jaycee Dugard: Freedom: My Book of Firsts

Freedom: My Book of Firsts

Description

Freedom: My Book of Firsts, a memoir by Jaycee Lee Dugard, the bestselling author of A Stolen Life, whose widely acclaimed account of being kidnapped at age 11 and remaining a prisoner for 18 years became an international bestseller in 2011. The kidnapping of Ms. Dugard occurred on June 10, 1991 in South Lake Tahoe, California, as she was walking from her home to her school bus stop. She was 11-years-old at the time. She remained missing for 18 years, until 2009, when her captor, a convicted sex offender, was arrested. In her new book, Ms. Dugard will tell the story of her first experiences after years in captivity: the joys that accompanied her newfound freedom and the challenges of adjusting to life on her own. "There is life after something tragic happens," Ms. Dugard said. "Life doesn't have to end if you don't want it to. It's all in how you look at it. Somehow, I still believe that we each hold the key to our own happiness and you have to grab it where you can in whatever form it might take."

When A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was published in 1889, Mark Twain was undergoing a series of personal and professional crises. Thus what began as a literary burlesque of British chivalry and culture grew into a disturbing satire of modern technology and social thought. The story of Hank Morgan, a nineteenth-century American who is accidentally returned to sixth-century England, is a powerful analysis of such issues as monarchy versus democracy and free will versus determinism, but it is also one of Twain's finest comic novels, still fresh and funny after more than 100 years. "The Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology" combines the highest-quality colour photographs, clinical descriptions and explanatory line drawings to provide an outstanding and accessible visual reference of ocular disease and its clinical signs. The book systematically covers examination, investigation and diagnosis of all the common and many of the rarer ophthalmic disorders. Illustrations of the embryology, histology, pathology and systemic diseases are included as appropriate to elucidate the clinical information. The new edition has been exhaustively updated throughout, with over 1000 new illustrations, many chapters written by new contributors and new, up-to-the-minute information on refractive surgery and LASIK. From the reviews of the second edition: 'It is a bounty of superbly chosen photographs ...this atlas is unsurpassed in Freedom: My Book of Firsts free ebook its representational clarity...A definite visual feast, this book is a prize for any bookshelf' - ("American Journal of Ophthalmology"). 'The authors are superb teachers, and the book is an excellent educational medium' - ("Doody's Health Sciences Book Review Annual"). 'It is always easy to find criticism of a book if one looks hard enough.

Edie: American Girl

Description

When Edie was first published, it quickly became an international bestseller and then took its place among the classic books about the 1960s. Edie Sedgwick exploded into the public eye like a comet. She seemed to have it all: she was aristocratic and glamorous, vivacious and young, Andy Warhol s superstar. But within a few years she flared out as quickly as she had appeared, and before she turned twenty-nine she was dead from a drug overdose. In a dazzling tapestry of voicesfamily, friends, lovers, rivalsthe entire meteoric trajectory of Edie Sedgwick s life is brilliantly captured. And so is the Pop Art world of the 60s: the sex, drugs, fashion, musicthe mad rush for pleasure and fame. All glitter and flash on the outside, it was hollow and desperate withinlike Edie herself, and like her mentor, Andy Warhol. Alternately mesmerizing, tragic, and horrifying, this book shattered many myths about the 60s experience in America."

David Baddiel,Jim Field: The Person Controller

The Person Controller

Description

From the author of THE PARENT AGENCY comes a thrilling, funny and touching new adventure. Fred and Ellie are twins. But not identical (because that's impossible for a boy and a girl). They do like all the same things, though. Especially video games. Which they are very good at. They aren't that good, however, at much else - like, for example, football, or dealing with the school bullies. Then, they meet the Mystery Man, who sends them a video game controller, which doesn't look like any other controller they've ever seen. And it doesn't control any of their usual games. When the twins find out what it does control, though, it seems like the answer to all their problems. And the key to all their wildest dreams. At least it seems like that...

Louise Bates Ames and her colleagues synthesize a lifetime of observation of children, consultation, and discussion with parents. These books will help parents to better understand their children and will guide them through the fascinating and sometimes trying experiences of modern parenthood. Donald J. Cohen, M.D., Director, Yale Child Study Center, Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology, Yale School of Medicine" This is a Harry Potter quiz book like no other. It won't be asking you questions like "what school did Harry Potter go to?" (If you are a Harry Potter fan, then of course you know the answer!) Rather it asks questions which will develop your literary appreciation of the Harry Potter books and your general knowledge of the Harry Potter phenomenon. Some of these questions are easy, quite a few are fiendishly difficult, and several of them really don't have simple answers, but thinking about possible answers is what it is all about. Work The Person Controller download PDF through this quiz book (with an eye on the answers) and come out the other end with a much better understanding of the phenomenon that is Harry Potter. After each question, space is provided in which you may jot down your preliminary answer. In this quiz book there is a focus on the language used by J. K. Rowling. From alchemy to whomping via such gems as hallows and knickerbockers the books use a range of words which are not part of the everyday word stock of most speakers of English, and certainly not of most children. True fans of the Harry Potter series will want to know them! There is a mass of information around the world of Harry Potter, some of it trivia (but fun!), some key to our appreciation of the books. Also fans have realized that the books have some serious points to make. No book achieves anything approaching the success of the Harry Potter series unless it includes something that makes us all think. This Harry Potter Quiz Book aims to draw your attention to some of these big questions. Knowing the name of Harry Potter's school is not likely to change the life of any one of us, but thinking about the moral issues raised in the booksmight do just that.

Unfinished Empire: The Global Expansion of Britain

Description

John Darwin's "After Tamerlane," a sweeping six-hundred-year history of empires around the globe, marked him as a historian of "massive erudition" and narrative mastery. In "Unfinished Empire," he marshals his gifts to deliver a monumental one-volume history of Britain's imperium-a work that is sure to stand as the most authoritative, most compelling treatment of the subject for a generation.Darwin unfurls the British Empire's beginnings and decline and its extraordinary range of forms of rule, from settler colonies to island enclaves, from the princely states of India to ramshackle trading posts. His penetrating analysis offers a corrective to those who portray the empire as either naked exploitation or a grand "civilizing mission." Far from ever having a "master plan," the British Empire was controlled by a range of interests often at loggerheads with one another and was as much driven on by others' weaknesses as by its own strength. It shows, too, that the empire was never stable: to govern was a violent process, inevitably creating wars and rebellions."Unfinished Empire "is a remarkable, nuanced history of the most complex polity the world has ever known, and a serious attempt to describe the diverse, contradictory ways-from the military to the cultural-in which empires really function. This is essential reading for any lover of sweeping history, or anyone wishing to understand how the modern world came into being.

"NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF "A SPY AMONG FRIENDS " A "New York Times" Notable Book of the Year A "Washington Post" Best Book of 2007 One of the Top 10 Best Books of 2007 ("Entertainment Weekly") "New York Times" Best of the Year Round-Up "New York Times" Editors Choice Eddie Chapman was a charming criminal, a con man, and a philanderer. He was also one of the most remarkable double agents Britain has ever produced. Inside the traitor was a man of loyalty; inside the villain was a hero. The problem for Chapman, his spymasters, and his lovers was to know where one persona ended and the other began. Jules Watson: The Boar Stone

The Boar Stone

Description

Minna, a Roman serving girl living in Roman Britain, fights for her survival when she and her friend Cian are enslaved in the wilds of barbarian Scotland. They soon find themselves in the midst of the conflict between Romans and Picts, and Minna finds her loyalties are torn.

Ammianus Marcellinus was the last great Roman historian, and his writings rank alongside those of Livy and Tacitus. The Later Roman Empire chronicles a period of twenty-five years during Marcellinus' own lifetime, covering the reigns of Constantius, Julian, Jovian, Valentinian I, and Valens, and providing eyewitness accounts of significant military The Boar Stone pdf events including the Battle of Strasbourg and the Goth's Revolt. Portraying a time of rapid and dramatic change, Marcellinus describes an Empire exhausted by excessive taxation, corruption, the financial ruin of the middle classes and the progressive decline in the morale of the army. In this magisterial depiction of the closing decades of the Roman Empire, we can see the seeds of events that were to lead to the fall of the city, just twenty years after Marcellinus' death.

Zara Steiner: The Triumph of the Dark: European International History 1933-1939

The Triumph of the Dark: European International History 1933-1939

Description

In this magisterial narrative, Zara Steiner traces the twisted road to war that began with Hitler's assumption of power in Germany. Covering a wide geographical canvas, from America to the Far East, Steiner provides an indispensable reassessment of the most disputed events of these tumultuous years. Steiner underlines the far-reaching consequences of the Great Depression, which shifted the initiative in international affairs from those who upheld the status quo to those who were intent on destroying it. In Europe, the l930s were Hitler's years. He moved the major chess pieces on the board, forcing the others to respond. From the start, Steiner argues, he intended war, and he repeatedly gambled on Germany's future to acquire the necessary resources to fulfil his continental ambitions. Only war could have stopped him-an unwelcome message for most of Europe. Misperception, miscomprehension, and misjudgment on the part of the other Great Powers leaders opened the way for Hitler's repeated diplomatic successes. It is ideology that distinguished the Hitler era from previous struggles for the mastery of Europe. Ideological presumptions created false images and raised barriers to understanding that even good intelligence could not penetrate. Only when the leaders of Britain and France realized the scale of Hitler's ambition, and the challenge Germany posed to their Great Power status, did they finally declare war.

Before they can learn to write, little children need lots of practice with pen control, and this book Burnt Offerings: An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel free ebook provides plenty of opportunities for that, as children can complete the various activities again and again, using the special wipe-clean pen provided. Includes mazes, dot-to-dot, things to draw and more. In the fall of 1957 the University of California Press expanded Arnheim's 1933 book "Film" by four essays and brought that landmark work back into print as "Film as Art". Now nearly fifty years after that re-edition, this book continues to occupy an important place in the literature of film. Arnheim's method, provocative in this age of technological wizardry, was to focus on the way art in film was derived from that medium's early limitations: no sound, no color, and no three-dimensional depth.
